Women’s Shelters in Wayne County, By Judge Richard Halloran

While working as a district court judge in Detroit, Michigan, Judge Richard B. Halloran played a key role in the advancement of the 36th District Court’s Domestic Violence Docket. For more than twenty years, Judge Halloran has been dedicated to increasing domestic violence awareness and promoting support of women’s shelters.

Several women’s shelters are located in Wayne County, Michigan, to provide support and information for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. First Step in Western Wayne County is dedicated to creating a community where there is both support and social justice for the victims of domestic abuse. The phone number is 313-459-5900. In downtown Detroit, the YWCA Interim House is one of the oldest and largest shelters in Detroit. The goal of the shelter is to empower women by providing them with the means to recover from the effects of sexual assault and domestic abuse. Information can be obtained by calling 313-259-9922.

All of these shelters and many others provide food, clothing, and personal hygiene provisions for women and children in need. Services include information on legal options, personal protection, and health care. The shelters also provide counseling that includes information on how to move on after experiencing domestic violence.

“The Rosedale Park Improvement Association,” by Judge Richard Halloran

The Rosedale Park Improvement Association (RPIA) is a membership-driven neighborhood organization on the northwest side of Detroit, Michigan. Founded in 1929, the Rosedale Park community has long been one of the more desired residential neighborhoods in Detroit for its beautiful homes, greenspaces, and civic activities and events. Representing over 1,600 households, the Rosedale Park board of directors arranges for community services, including trash collection, recycling collection, snow removal, and a neighborhood security network. In addition, RPIA organizes many social activities throughout the year, including a farmers’ market, block parties, Christmas light shows, an annual Easter egg hunt, a community picnic, and more. RPIA releases a community newsletter seven times a year entitled The Rosedale Park News, and the community slogan is “Small Town Living in a Big City.”
